In Austria, St. Martin's Day features a tradition of sharing roasted goose for dinner. Legend has it that St. Martin hid in a barn full of geese to avoid becoming a bishop, and the gaggle's squawks revealed his hiding spot. Children walk in lantern processions singing Martin songs, while families gather for a festive meal and wine blessing.
Visit the Wei9enkirchen parish church, a Roman Catholic church consecrated on the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The church's impressive west tower is visible from afar, and it is surrounded by a 16th-century fortification with towers, embrasures, and spy holes. At 6:00 p.m., a holy mass is held with the blessing of the new wine brought by locals.
After the blessing, enjoy a ceremony with tasting of the new Wachau wine at the Teisenhoferhof. This historic four-winged complex features a courtyard with arcades, deep niches, and a fortress-like west front. Built in the 15th century, it also houses the Wachau Museum, where traditional costumes are displayed, and during festivities, locals wear their traditional Wachau attire, including stone feather hats.
